KENT TERRACE RESERVE

MR BAYLISS CAVEAT.

THE MATTER HUNG UP.

At last night’s. meeting of the City Council, a letter was read from Messrs Bell, Gully, Bell, and Myers, stating that they had been, instructed by Mr G. H. Baylis to inform the Council that if it persisted in its intention to close to the public the reserve between Kent and Cambridge terraces would take steps to assert the rights of the citizens.

An opinion was received from the City Solicitor on the matter. The Town Clerk was about to read it. 'when Councillor Izard objected to any solicitor’s opinion being read in open Council. He did not want everybody to know what a confidential adviser recommended.

A letter was received from Mr Baylis, dated yesterday, appealing to the Council, on behalf of the citizens, not to close the reserve, but to allow it still to be used as a place of l'est and enjoyment by children and others during the fine weather. “I do not want to take up the position,” the letter concluded, “of fighting the Council, but this course must follow if your Council persists in closing the reserve and excluding the public.” The Town Clerk stated that the top part of the reserve had been denuded of trees, and the footpath had been taken up. Councillor Izard suggested leaving the matter to be dealt with by thi-

Mayor. The Mayor: Of course there’s something more than the mere question of Mr Baylis's protest. There is a very decided opinion amongst the public that the reserve is not going to be put to a proper purpose. Councillor Izard: There are som<members of this Council who thmk that. That is why I want the matter to be held over.

The Mayor: Something might be said by the Councillors in the mean time as to whether the work is to be gone on with under the previous authorise*. I would suggest that nothing further he done until the Council has an opportunity oi deciding what it is best to do.

The matter was accordingly post poned.
