THE LIQUOR TRADE
DEPUTATION TO A MINISTER OF THE CROWN. SYDNEY, March 28. A deputation representing the liquor trade to-day submitted their views on the new Licensing Bill to the Chief Secretary (Mr Hogue). • They asked that he opened at stated hours on Sundays; complained of the unfair competition of clubs ; asked that permission he given to supply liquor on a doctor’s prescription; that a heavier fine should be inflicted on the buyer than on the seller within prohibited hours. The Minister, in reply, said he would do nothing that would tend to increase work on Sunday. He was in sympathy with regard to the better regulation ol clubs, but was afraid of the doctor’s prescription proposal. He could see no force in making the fine on an illicit buyer heavier than on the seller.
