It is interesting to note that th© Great International Railway Conference which is to meet at Washington, U.S.A., in May, and which will be attended by the General Manager of the New Zealand Railways, is one of the world’s most representative gatherings. This year th© delegates will speak on behalf of interests equalling the stupendous total of £5,400,000,000. The conferences are held at five-year intervals, and are practically representative of all civilised countries in the glohe. Tlie headquarters are at- Brussels, the convening body being the Belgian GoA'ernment. This year s gathering is mow* important from the fact that, it will be the first time the conference has been held in the "Western world, and the United States Government and the Railway Association are endeavouring to make the occasion specially attractive. The proceedings are to be conducted in English. Every phase of railway business will ho brought under revioAY, experts in the many varied railway subjects submitting reports Avhicli have been under compilation since the previous conference, and bringing best railway practices up to date. These Avill he debated in sections. Many of the questions discussed Avili probably have special, bearing on Australasian railway problems, and should prove of considerable value.
