BRISBANE. Ala veil 22. Natives report that the remains ot a largo ship have drifted ashore on York Peninsula, fifty miles south of Batavia river The beach is strewn with wreckage, including stanchions and a deck-liou.se. Large quantities of sago- and flour have come ashore, showing evidence of not having been long in the water. The Government steamer has gone to make investigations. BRISBANE, March 23. It is not expected that the Government steamer will return until Sunday from the scene of the wreck near Batavia river, Yorke Peninsula. The presence of sago amongst the wreckage suggests that the- vessel was a trader to the East Indies. The natives report that there were no- signs of bodies or survivors. It is thought that the ship may have struck a reef in deep water, and that survivors may be stranded on an island. SYDNEY, March 24. The schooner Enterprise, from L-ong Island, reports having discovered the beaches strewn with large quantities of Oregon timber. There was evidence of the wreck at a recent date of a large lumber ship, or that a deck cargo had been washed overboard. No marks were on the timber to lead to identification. The crew also discovered an abandoned hut on the island wherein was stacked a quantity of timber' and glass, hut there were no signs of recent habitation. Amongst the papers found in the hut was a note dated November, 1896, signed by the mate of the ketch Siskin, which was wrecked on the island, stating that he and five of the Kanaka crew were then leaving for Cooktown, and asking anyone not in need of the stores there to leave them, as the owner expected to come back and take them, The only living animals seen on the island were half a dozen goats and a cat.
