RIFLE-SHOOTING

SATURDAY’S COMPETITIONS. Despite the counter attraction on Saturday, viz., the athletic meeting, volunteers turned out in large force, one hundred and thirty-five being present at Trentham. Tlie enthusiasm which marked the opening of the season has in no way waned, and volunteers are turning out as strong, if not stronger, at the conclusion of the season as at its commencement. Some of the corps went out to complete their class-firing before the winter sets in, but a number of corps were out for trophy-shooting. Captain Hobbs (Hutt Valley Rifles) acted as range-officer, and Lieutenant Hollard, of the same corps, officiated in the trench. The following corps were represented: Hutt Valley Rifles, 36; Zealandia Rifles, 21; Guards, 17; Kelburne Rifles, 14; Submarine Miners, 13; Highland Rifles, 12; Post and Telegraph Rifles, 12; College Rifles, 10. Class-firing was carried out by the Guards, College Rifles, and Post and Telegraph Rifles. The Hutt Valley Rifles. Zealaudia Rifles, SubMarine Miners and Highland Rifles were trophy-shooting, and a match was also fired between the two last-named corps, the Scotsmen winning by 59 points. The 200 and 500yds ranges were used. Details : HIGHLANDERS v. SUBMARINE MINERS. Conditions —Eight men a side; seven shots at each range.

SUBMARINE MINERS. Like tha Highlanders the Submarine M’tiers also competed for trophies in addition to the aforesaid match. It was the final competition for the corps championship, a cup presented by Kirkcaldie and Stains being the prize. Sapper Kerslake was again the winner. Q.M.S. Morse being “runner-up.” Sapper Kerslake won the cup in 1903. This is his second win.

This company fired its final match for the company’s belt, Morrison challenge cup, and Mr S. Clark’s trophy. Colour-Sergeant Bunckenburg won the belt with an aggregate of 846, LanceSergeant Guy (619) being second. At Polhill Gully on Saturday afternoon the Engineers fired the third match of the third series of competitions for the Hallenstein Cup and company’s trophies. Scores: — A Class.

PETONE rifle club. The above club practically brought their shooting season to a close on Saturday, when trophies were competed for and also the last for the championship of the club As will be seen by the aggregates, C. Trevethick, who has shot most consistently during the season, annexed the championship shield, with a total of 533 points, being 34 over centres. The conditions of the contest were as follows: —Four matches at 200, 500, and 600yds, and four at 500, 600, and 700yds, 7 shots each range, the three highest of each series counting. A medal, presented by Mr C. Hollard for the highest aggregates to the members receiving a handicap was secured by W. Thomas, J. Maelachlan, who shot well during the latter part of the contest, was a good runner-up. Scores:
