RACING IN NEW ZEALAND

WELLINGTON RACING CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING.

The local Metropolitan Club was fortunate in experiencing favourable weather for the opening day of its Cup meeting. The attendance at the Hutt Park was large, and compared favourably with that at previous summer meetings. Among those present were the Hons R. J. Seddon and J. Carroll, Major-General Babington, Sir George Clifford, Mr George G .Stead, Hon J. D. Ormond, and Messrs G. Hunter, W. J. and F. Douglas, and H. Gainsford, from Hawke’s Bay ; Mr Walter Clifford, from Marlborough : Mr W. E. Bidwill, a prominent official of the Wairarapa Racing Club; Messrs J. H. Nixon, Ross, Allen, and G. Morse, of Wanganui. Although the Cup provided the only exciting finish, the racing throughout was interesting. The handicapper (Mr J. Chadwick) came in for a good deal of congratulation for the manner in which he had brought the horses together in the big event.

The Hawke’s Bay-owned colt Submarine received the most support of the half-dozen runners for the Anniversary Handicap, but was never prominent. The P’orirua-trained Gold Crown, who is an improved gelding this season, waited on Brighton to the turn, and won easily at the finish. The winner was one of the least fancied, and paid a good price. Coxswain, Be Beau, and Aotea were withdrawn from the Ruapehu Hack Handicap. In a field of twelve Master Alix was made a level-money favourite. Piloted by Hewitt on the inside, h? slipped the field, and came in by himself. Matakokiri, who was second to begin, occupied that position throughout. The Blenheim-owned Rose Petal, who was greatly fancied, finished fourth. The Wellesley Stakes proved a gift to the Ya Id burst representative Munjeet. She had inside berth, and after getting chopped out came on the outside of the field and von easily from the Stepniak filly Marguerite. All the fourteen acceptors started for the "Wellington Cup. The field was with one exception, when Ma-haki won ten years back, the largest that has yet contested the race. The quality of the field was first class. The contest was probably the most exciting in the' history of the race. The Yaldhurst filly. Nightfall, who was a good favourite, held a prominent position throughout, but only secured the verdict by a narrow margin. She- was turned out in the pink of condition, finished gamely under punishment, and was well handled by B. H. Hewitt, whose second success in the race it was. The victory of Nightfall was very pleasing to Mr Stead, as she was bred at her owner’s stud. Nightfall first competed at Randwick in September, where she showed good form. At the C.J.C. meeting in November she won the Derby and Oaks. Her only appearance at Elkerslie was in the Derby, in which she had the misfortune to fall. Melodeon was the unlucky horse in Saturday’s race. He came with a great rattle at- the finish, and a couple of chains past the post was in front. Dennehy (Melodeon’s rider) was bumped on the rails at the back of the course, and injured one of his feet. After the race he was carried to the ambulance room and attended by Dr Purdy. Jeanne d’Arc ran up to- her best- form. Had the distance been a mile and a quarter, her number mighthave been hoisted on top.

Ballarat made a bold bid for the Telegraph Handicap, which race the ITutt-trained mare won last year. Petrovna. (who was successful in the race two years ago) won comfortably. Although favourite on the machine, she returned the good price of £3. The success of the Hon J. D. Ormond’s Lyrist in the Tongariro Hack Handicap was popular. J. Gallagher received a round of applause when he returned to the weighing enclosure. Sylvrie ran a good race, hut- the distance and pace at -which the race- was run found out most of the others.

Air Timi Kara’s Kaiuku was the only withdrawal from the Nursery Handicap. Of the seven runners three are trained by All* Prosser at Porirua. Probable was on the move, and got a break. Alarguerite caught him at the distance, and won easily. It is not often a two-year-old is raced twice in one day. The gallop in the Wellesley (Stakes earlier in the day had evidently done Alarguerite no harm. Master Alix, who is a particularly good beginner, had the Electric Handicap Avon after a furlong had been covered. At Air Ala-chel’s clearing sale at Christchurch last autumn Master Alix was purchased by his present owner for 125 guineas. It is reported that 700 guineas was refused for him on Saturday. The brother to Petrovna is trained at Riccarton by Claude Piper, avlio has charge of Mr J. A. Buckland’s team of -trotters. The most successful horseman was L. 11. Hewitt, who rode three Avinners in succession. C. Jenkins was. the only other jockey to score more than one win.

Speculation on the totalisator during the afternoon was brisk. The sum of £13,459 was invested on the 1-2 machines, against £13,701 last year. Tlio amount on the double (£1742) brought the total for the day up to £15,210. This is £ISOO ahead of last year, when there was no double. The record for the day is £16,743, which amount was handled in 1901. The sum of £3060 was put through on the Cup on Saturday. The best Cup betting race was that of 1901, when £3707 Avas invested.

The Nightfall-Petrovna combination in the double machine was backed 158 times, and paid £9 12s. The investments on other Cup horses coupled with Petrovna were as follows: —Achilles and Ghoorka 115, Convoy 28, Red Gaunt/lett 9*2), QuarrymUn 26. Joe Chamberlain 13, Jeanne d’Arc 29, Armistice 11, Mielodeon 23, Flamen 7, Tercelet 5, Ropa 7, Bowman 5. Jupp’s Band enlivened the proceedings with a programme of selections. The club’s patrons were well catered for by Mr A. King, who had charge of the luncheon booth and afternoon tea. Mr Harry Piper’s starting was up to his best form. Mr A. E. Whyte and

his assistant (Air J. M. Griffiths) had the details in connection with the meeting working smoothly. Details of the racing are appended: Anniversary Handicap, of 120 govs; second; horse to receive 15 eovs from the stake. One mile. 150 Mr J. H.
