Mr William G. Chappie, son of tho City Collector of Rates, has been appointed to take charge of the office of Mi- A. James, architect, Feilding. ]\lr Chappie was indentured to Mr Swan, architect, for several years. The Berlin police have arrested a remarkable sAvindler, Avho for some years past had been carrying on an extensive business as a fortune-teller and preparer of lo\-© philtres. “This woman, the Avife of a labourer, was,” says the London “Daily ' Telegraph” corresponded, “attended by s§fenty-two spirits, each of AA’hich had its ‘sign —a star, crescent, cross, triangle, etc. Her opinions and A-aticinations she engrossed on parchment, surrounding them AA-ith the cabalistic signs representing the spirits Avhose aid she had invoked. The least price charged for these documents was fifteen marks, and that her business was a flourishing one is evidenced by the fact that the police found over 2000 marks in cash in the house. Her most lucrative practice appears to* have been Avith those clients Avhose love affairs were in an unsatisfactory condition, and her cupboards Avere full of recipes for the forlorn individuals. One of these is as folloAvs. It is for young ladies: — Procure three hairs of the object of your desires, and put these, Avith three drops of your oavii blood, on a slice of quince.
