FEILDING

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Those that did not know before are being rapidly taught that bikes are not suitable carriages for stormy weatber. There has been scarlet fever in the Wanganui Collegiate Scbool, and to the intense satisfaction of my doctor, the school has been broken up and the boys distributed, to their homes. One of them in this direction sickened the following day and probably some of the others will follow the fashion. The Kimbolton road, which is two chains wide, is being improved by doing away with the ditches on each side of the metal that used to confine the traffic to dangerously narrow limits I don’t quite understand wny. but for some time dairy farmers have been seding out, and I noticed the other day a large herd of splendid cows, many oi' them near calving, were sacrificed for what eight months ago would have been considered half their value. Is a slump expected in the blitter market, or is the cost of labour killing the industry? Perhaps its a little of both. . .... The lambing season has set in, with it 3 usual concomitants. Owners have not a minute to spare, and stray dogs are being improved off the face of the country. The roads are getting spotted with men out of work, but for all that, it is not easy to obtain honest, reliable hands at a moderate wage. The old feeling of a servant taking an interest in his employer’s affairs seems to have almost completely died out, and employers have- been made very shy of engaging strangers. Of course, they ought to feel honoured, but if they do they don’t show it.
