SKIM-MILK FOR FOALS
In this country one seldom hears of skim-milk being given to foals. In America, however, the practice is by no means uncommon, large quantities of this liquid being annually used, in some of the great studs in that country. It is, at best, but an inperfect substitute for the genuine milk of tho dam, but whore, for some reason or another, the mare is not able to supply the foal with the necessary nutriment, excellent results have been obtained by giving skim-milk enriched with some sugar and other substances calculated to supply the food materials in which it is found deficient when compared with mare’s milk. Even after foals are weaned' this skim-milk is very often continued, as when supplemented with grain foods of various lands—say, crushed oats or a little wheat or pea meal— it is found very conducive to tho 'building up of the wealth of bone and substance which it is so desirable to encourage in young growing horses.
