HAWERA AND WEST COAST FANCIERS’ ASSOCIATION
i' j (From Our Own Correspondent.) The fourth show of the above society was held at Hawera on August 10th and 11th. Considering the time the society has been in existence and that last year it did not receive the patronage it deserved, this year's show may be termed a very successful one. The entries were reported to have been more numerous than on previous occasions, but in the majority of classes the quality of the exhibits was not at all satisfactory—that is, compared with such shows as T'imaru, Ashburton, and other similar sized towns. Exhibitions of incubators hatching chickens added interest to the show and the exhibit of a pair of Mallard ducks, a pair of Guinea fowls, a pair of Paradise ducks, and a Muscovy duck, shown by the Acclimatisation Society, attracted much attention. The public, by their attendance, also supported the show better than last year, but to a district like this the poultry show should be a fixture of some importance, especially when viewed from a money-making point of view, as the poultry industry will, no doubt in the future, add to the wealth of Taranaki The points prize was won by Captain Hood, of New Plymouth, with Mr Mills, of Hawera, second, and Mr G. G. iioulton third. Captain Hood's Golden Wyandotte was awarded the championship for best bird in the show, Mr Horker’s black
Orpington being runner-up, aud Miss Cane’s white Leghorn cock third. In Dorkings the first prize hen was a good bird, but the other exhibits were poor. .The birds awarded tickets in the Langshan class were good, as were also the exhibits in Game. There were 52 entries in the Orpington class and the quality was firstclass. There were good specimens ui Plymouth Hocks, golden, silver and white Wyandotte classes, but with the exception of one bird in the latter class the whites were very badly wasted and would not at all please Judge Rogen. In Minorcas the first cockerel was the only good specimen, and white and brown Leghorns formed a very good class. Andalusians were more or less old-fashioned. Pekin and Indian Runner ducks formed good classes and the quality was excellent, the Pekins exhibited by Mr Trott attracting much attention. There was poor competition in the pigeon class. As a whole, for a young society like the Hawera Association, this year’s show was very successful, and the secretary and exec i:ive deserve commendation for the i Pirn It achieved.
