MILK YIELD OF COWS
The University of Illinois agri, cultural experiment station at Urbana issued a bulletin containing particulars as to the testing of 144 cows on dairy farms. It is stated that the cow that yielded the most product gave 89491 b of milk, anf.l made 4721 bof butter. The poorest cow produced 14821 b of milk, 681 b of butter; and the average production for all the herds except one was 47211 b of milk, 3.67 .per cent, fat, 1731 b of butter fat, and 2021 bof butter. The most profitable oow gave a net profit of 57.22d01. The average net profit was 9.96d01. per cow. These facts, it is contested, show clearly that the average production of the dairy of the State can be doubled, and profit inoreasGjd fourfold. This can be done with little expense to the farmer. It will require better oaro and hotter feed for his stock, and the application of the scales and the Baboock teat, so that ho can select and breed liis animals more intelligently. The results in the bulletin, it is said, indicate that good oaro and good feed, with judicious selection, are the prime factors necessary for profitable milk and butter production.
