CANADIAN CHEESE TRADE
Ike ferring to the cheese making industry of Canada, Mjf L. W. Wheaton, of Toaxyntoy says that it is not so very long ago that the leaders in daily thought and practice in Canada were advising the curtailing of the manufacturing of cheese lest the British market be overdone and the price of cheese reduced beiow tire profit line. But that advice was not acted upon, and Canada is to-day making more ffliep.se that was ever dreamed of a decade ago. ' Contrary to the expectations of many, this large inor'ealje in the make has not iedluced 1 tlie price. The price was higher ■this last season than it has bean for some years, and 1903 will go down to history ai3 a record one, as far as the cheese industry is concerned. . ! ' In the later years of the last century WO were exporting over 80 per cant, of aLL ~ the cheese) imported by Great Britain, an achievement then looked upon as nothing short of a marvel, considering -no comparatively short tint®. we had been in the business. But what will be thought of the present-day record ? The latest official import statistics of the... United Kingdom, show that during August last .mS.OOOcwt. of cheese were imported, of which quantity Canada supplied 800.000 ©vt., .thus almost monopolising Groat Britain's import trade in cheese. According to these figures, we are sending forward over 85 per cent, of the cheese imported by Great Britain. If this demand keeps up until this season's make i& disposed of, as it likely will, we shall have little enough to meet the needs of Shis growing trade.
