VISITORS TO PALMERSTON

ENTERTAINED.

Special to the “Mail.” PALMERSTON, November 19. The annual smoke concert given by the Manawatu A. and P. Association to officials judges and visitors to the show took place to-night. Major Dunk presided- About one hundred guests were present. The toast “"Agricultural Interests was proposed by Mr llodder and replied to by Mr Gilruth, Government Bacteriologist, and Professor Lowrie, president of the Canterbury Agricultural College. Mr Gi-lrutli drew attention to what the Government had dene in the encouragement of agriculture, and expressed the opinion that New Zealand producers should do even more than they were doing in co-operating with the department in this work. Professor Lowrie thought the farmers in New Zealand were . too apt to depreciate their own eHoyts; notwithstanding the fact that they -were doing exceptionally good work. Re spoke well of the work of the Department of Agriculture in grading exports, urging the importance of a good name for our products in the London market. He did not- £<ee any reason, for example, why Hawke’s Bay should be one degree behind Canterbury for “prime.” The explanation was that Canterbury originally sent “prime” and thus got the name for it in London. New Zealand ought to be the last community in the world to be beaten in the dairy industry. He had led in the work in Great Britain, and led the work in

Australia, and. he- thought the conditions: of the dairy industry in this colony were such that they could not ho approached in any country in tiie world. One direation in winch improvement could be made was in culling more severely than at present unprofitable stock from tho herds and raising the yield of each particulai beast. The importance of having milk in a clean state when it was delivered to tho factory was urged by the speaker, who- also* raised a warning voice against the tendency which he had found existed of putting upon the market lambs six or seven months old off pastures instead of younger lambs'off milk. Regarding the prospects of agriculture in New Zealand, ho said there was a wealth of vegetation here ho had never seen surpassed m any country lie had visited.. Numbers of other toasts we.ro also proposed. Mr Perry, of Master ton, in replying to “Kindred Societies/'’ said the present Palmerston show was the finest ever held in the North Island.
