tFrom Our Own Correspondent.) The Waipawa Cricket Club has notified the secretary of the H. 13. Cricket Sub-association of its intention to compete for the senior championships. The competitions will commence on October 21st. In association with St. Peter’s Church, it has been customary to hold annually a flower show, [usually on some date about mid-spring. This year the date has been fixed for November 3rd. The Oddfellows’ Hall has been engaged, where the blooms will be displayed, amongst which will probably be found some beautiful specimens of roses sent from Te Auto and Napier. A schedule of competitions in bouquet making and arrangement of table floral decorations and kindred subjects is being arranged. This show sustains a high degree of excellence, and enjoys great popularity each year. At the recent examination held in association with the volunteer school of instrpetion at Woodville, C’apt. H. C. Collett, of the Waipawa Rifles, gained high marks, and has received shoals of congratulatory speeches and letters. An inspection parade of the Fire Brigade was held on Monday night, a good attendance of members being present. At a subsequent meeting correspondence was read from the secretary United Fire Brigades’ Association, in reference to sending a New Zealand team to Victoria. —Received. Further, in reference to the Fire Brigades’ Bill, asking the Brigade to request the member for the district, Mr Chas. Hall, to assist with bast endeavour to liave the Bill passed this session.—lt was resolved to write to Mr Hall and ask for liis co-operation. A new member was elected. October 16th.
St. Petor’s (Anglican) church is temporarily closed. During the period, probably fourteen or twenty days, extensive alterations and improvements will bo made to the interior. New flooring is being laid, tlie north and south windows are to be re-> constructed and the partitions filled with' cathedral glass, a isoheme of complete ventilation inserted, the walls washed and oiled and new drapings hung in the chancel. The western and eastern windows will not be altered, but the exterior of tlie church will be repainted. Re-opening services will be held, probably on the first Sunday in November. Dean Hovel 1, of Napier, is invited to preach the sermons of the series, special music is in preparation by the choir, and offertories will be solicited in aid of expenses. On the succeeding evening tlie occasion will be further celebrated by a social evening, included in which will he a lecturette and programme of music. The Rev. Henry Brad dock, of the London Church Parochial Mission, who has during tlie last few months held very successful mission services in many parishes in this colony, has by invitation of the Vicar of the parish of Waipawa, arrived liere and commenced a mission of ten days period. The first service was held in the parish room. A large congregation was present, the text chosen was “Oil and Lamps” and the discourse was varied with interesting anecdotes and the singing of choruses and hymns especially suitable for mission service. Mr Braddock will address a meeting of ladies and children on Friday afternoon. A public .meeting of ratepayers was called by the Town Board for tlie evening of Thursday, the loth instant, to discuss the advisablenetsa of obtaining a loan of £3OO for drainage extension, cloven ratepayers were present. The chairman explained that it was proposed to- do certain works required to complete tho drainage scheme, estimated to cost £IBO, made up thus; —Connections in the Great North Road £2O, main sower in Great North Road £SO, main in Waverley street £BS, main in Matthew street £35. The Board only proposed taking up £IBO, leaving £l2O available when required. This would cost, at the rate of one-eighteenth of a, penny in the £ for 26 years—about £ls a year, spread over the whole area of the town district. After a small discussion it was moved by Mr W. I. LLmbrick and seconded by Mr Pattison, “That a poll of the ratepayers of the Town District be taken, for the purpose or affirming or rejecting the said proposal.” Carried unanimously. It was decided that the poll be taken on Thursday, the 29th instant. The monthly meeting of the school committed was held last night. Mr Downes, chairman. Formal correspondence was received. In reply to a circular from the Public Schoolsi Athletic Association, it vfas decided to ask the members of committee to become members of the Association. The head-
•master reported an inoreased attendance since the holidays, it having mounted to 167. A typewriter had been plaoed in tho school and a typewriting class formed. He had purchased forty volumes as a nucleus for a school library, trusting to a successful school concert for tho wherewithal, and donations cf books from those who felt disposed to give would be thankfully received ; and stating that tho annual Schools’ Athletic Sports were fixed for the 4th December.
It was decided to take out- a. policy m the Government Insurance Department to cover tho school-cleaner under the Compensation for Accident Act. Accounts amounting to £6 13s 9d were passed for payment. October 16th.
