Further advance-sheets of the New Zealand Year Book (dealing with finance) have been issued by the Registrar-General (Mr Von Dadeliszen). Tlio chief items in the latest issue concern revenue and expenditure, taxation and the public debt. Figures given, in reference to the Advances to Settlers Aat show that- since the Act came into operation in the year 1894 advances amounting to £4,316,940 have been authorised, the total number of applicants being 12,922. Of these. 1629 applicants declined the grants (£735,280) offered them, so that the net advances vo March 31st. 1903, numbered 11,293, and amounted to £3,581,660 Of the total advances .authorised, 10,534 were for advances under £SOO in value and 2338 over. The number of applications received to March 31st, 1903, was 16,643, for an aggregate amount of £5,927,495. Sir Joseph Ward stated last week, to a deputation that for the twelve months ending 31st March last £7047 had been paid to railway servants as cofnpensation for sickness or accident, and from the Ist April to sth August £2931 had been paid. A Maori has died at Aolianga (East Coast) at the advanced age cf 106 yearn. He was alleged to have been a lepor.
