GUNNERY AT LADYSMITH.
AN ADMIRAL AND A GENERAL AT LOGGERHEADS.
LONDON, September 23
Rear-Admiral Hedwortli Lambton claims an unreserved apology from Lieutenant-General Sir Archibald Hunter, who complained before Lord Elgin’s Commission (during its inquiry into the conduct of the Boer war) that the naval gunnery a,t Ladysmith “ left everything to bo desired,” and that ■“ schoolgirls could make equal practice.” Rear-Admiral Lambton declares that the practice was extremely brilliant, and that General Hunter is an “ ignorant numbskull.”
General Hunter has been appointed commander of the Madras army. [Lieutenant-General Sir Archibald Hunter, D. 5.0., has been commanding in Scotland since 1901. - He is one of “ Kitchener’s men.” He took part in the defence of Ladysmith during the memorable siege of that town in the early part of .the Boer Avar, and was mentioned twice in despatches and promoted from Major-General to Lieu-tenant-General. Rear-Admiral Lambton, C. 8., C.V.O. (then Captain Lambton), Avas allso at Ladysmith, where ho Avas in command of the Naval Brigade.J
