According to a return presented to Parliament yesterday there are 104 Defence Rifle Clubs in the colony with a> membership of 2678, distributed as follow's:—Auckland district 19 clubs, 488 members; Wellington 55 clubs, 1434 members; Nelson 12 clubs, 355 members; Otago 12 clubs, 259 members; Canterbury 6 clubs. 142 members. There is no regulation allowing members of Defence Rifle Clubs to qualify for capitation. The total annual cost of these clubs is made up in the expenditure for ammunition (l'ls per efficient member), grants for rifle ranges, proportion of salary of the inspecting officers, and a proportion of the salaries of the officers of the permanent staff and other departmental expenses. During the - year ended March 31st, 1902, the sum of £15,333 2s 8d was spent by Government in advertising. The principal amounts paid were (including weeklies of daily papers):—“Auckland Star,” £lll4 8s sd; “New Zealand Herald,” £797 as 6d; “Press,” Christchurch, £750 15s 7d; “Otago Daily, Times,” £691 13s Id; “Evening Post,” £635 15s 8d; “New Zealand Times,” £646 10s 6d; “Lyttelton Times,” £645 2s 6d; “Southland Times,” £434 17s lOd; “Dunedin Star,” £396 4s 6d; “Southland Daily News,” £340 8s 9d; “Auckland Observer,” £307 15s 10d'; “Free Lance,” £242 5s lOd. The sum of-£2O 10s was expended last year in advertising New Zealand scenery in ■Melbourne and Adelaide. News has been received by Mr Paul, of New Plymouth, that Dr O’Carroll, formerly of that town, died in Dublin on August 14tji.
