The funeral of Mrs Rambert, who recently died at Mahai 1 alia ra, was largely attended. Deceased, who leaves a young family of six, was a sister of Mrs Monk, who was burned in a building at 3.laharahara two years ago. Various entertainments continue to be promoted in aid of the proposed Dannevirke hospital. The railway employees will hold a “social''’ at an early date, and Dr lieid Macksy is to lecture in aid of the fund. Over .£3OO has been collected so far. The townspeople intend entertaining and making a presentation to Mr J. W. Walsh, who lias been postmaster here for ten years, and is leaving for the Bluff. * , DANNEVIKKE, July 24. The Wesleyan Endeavour Society has passed a resolution protesting against a totalizator permit being granted to the Danneviike Racing Club for an extra meeting. A copy of the resolution has been sent to the member for the district. Charles Crosse, a settler at Weber, for exposing diseased stock for sale Jcl and costs. Mr Henry Carlson, having agreed to pay the cost of a report on the suitability of waterfalls in the district for electric lighting, Messrs Burt and Co., of Dunedin, Avill furnish a report. The Hon J. The Council has decided that all new buildings from High street to the Post Office must be built of brick. Saturday. Mr W. J. Walsh, who has been poshmaster hero for ten years, and who is leaving for the l Bluff, lias been presented with a purse of sovereigns and other tokens of esteem by the townspeople. An elderly man named Peter Smith has been found dead in his hut. Death was due to natural causes. Owing to the rough weather, there was only a small entry of sheep at the stock sale. Bidding was spirited and prices hardened considerably, and there is unsatisfied demand. As a result of the favourable price of wool and the recent disclosure of the shortage of sheep in the colony, the Farmers' Union will hold a meeting during the week, which will be addressed by Sir William Russell, on the question of forming a new district. The appoint-

ment of a veterinary surgeon will also be considered. At a public meeting it was decided to take steps to establish a hospital here under the Act of 1885. It is proposed that the hospital shall be a separate institution from the Waipukurau district hospital but tinder the control of the Waipawa Board. One hundred yearly subscribers are required, and have almost been obtained. A committee consisting of Messrs Roes, H. Carlson, Gordon, Drummond. Ramsom, Blackiston, Bickford, Pan], Hagensen, Knight, Wilson, Cowper, \Vratt, Dr McKay and the Rev Grant, was elected. A.n indication of the progress of the district during the last ten years is given by the. fact that the average number of telegrams now dealt with is 72,000; the savings bank deposits amount to nearly £19,000; there is an average of ninety mails daily.
