Mr P. H-. Bernays, manager of a large manufacturing concern in San Francisco, in a letter to Mr Geo. M. Yerex, of this city, throws a little light on the great commercial “boom” that is now passing over America. In a lengthy letter he says: “This country is experiencing the most stupendous commercial prosperity I believe it has ever known. The railways are utterly unable to keep up with the demands upon them for freight transportation. Just in Southern California alone at this time, the fruit shippers are calling for three hundred cars a day to move their output of oranges and-lemons, while the railways are unable to supply more than one hundred and seventy cars per day. The Santa Fe R.R. is reported to have moved 13,000 cars of live stock from Kansas” City to Chicago in one month recently—more than it ever dreamed of being called upon to do.”
