The settlers in the Haywards district, on the Wellington-Upper Hntt line, are anxious that the present railway bridge, which is shortly to be replaced by a new bridge, should be retained for cart traffic when it is no longer required by the Railway Department. Messrs Field and Wilford, M.’sH.R., having been interviewed on the subject by the settlers, Mr Field referred the matter to the local governing body, the Hutt County Council ; but this Council has decided that the expense of preparing the bridge for cart traffic, making the approaches, etc., ■would be too great, and the pro jot has accordingly been abandoned. The site definitely fixed for the new post office at Otaki is that known as the “clock site,” at the end of Mill road, the main street. There is a clock tower which was placed there to the memory of Mrs MoWilliam, wife of the Rev J. McWilliam, and the clock is to be removed from the tower and fix ad in the new post office. The site is being cleared at Trentham for the new laboratory to be erected there for Mr Grilruth and his staff.
