The wholesale houses cf this city, basing their judgment on information and reports supplied to them by responsible persons, anticipate that the year 1903 —in its first half-period, at least- —wiU bo one of the most prosperous that lias been known in the history cf this colony. One ground for this forecast is the fine harvest now ripening on the Canterbury Plains and in the graingrowing districts of Otago. Reports to hand from these places contain the information that, given fine weather, the yield per acre, and also the quality of the grain, will exceed all records, known since the settlement of the districts. The record speed for an electric car is 110 miles an hour. This was reached on the electric railroad between Berlin and Zossen. The line is 26 miles long. The railway bridge which connects Venice with the mainland is 12,000ffc long, and has 222 arches. Up to October 11th there had been 38,177 cases of plague in Egypt, and 32,465 had ended fatally.
