YACHTING

The anniversary regatta was held by the Port Nicholson Yacirc Club on ’ Thursday. A light northerly wind prevailed. 'I lie Union Company’s steamer Penguin accompanied the various races, and a splendid view of ail the events was obtained from her decks. The results were as follows: — First-class Yachts. First prize, £10; second, trophy.—lorangi and Waitangi wero tho only competitors, and they went away evenly. The lorangi gained a slight lead, which she kept till after rounding Pinnacle rock buoy, Here tho w ind came in from Die south-east, and gave Waitangi a splendid chance to get before the wind in mid-channel, and mako up lest ground, but the lorangi was splendidly ~ handled, and walked away from her competitor, going to windward in fine style as the wind got back to tho north. She rounded Korokoro buoy fourteen minutes ahead, sailing in an easy winner. Second-class Yachts. Prizes, first £7 10s, second trophy.—Siren, Maliina and Muritai started. After the Halsvvell buoy was passed Muritai took tho lead, and won comfortably. Third-class Yachts. _ Prizes, first. £5, second trophy.—Karaka was i he only entran', and she formally sailed over tlie course. First-class Yachts (handicap). First prize, £10; second, trophy.—lorangi (scratch) won very easily from Waitangi (17min), which did not arrive till long after, her handicap time had elapsed. Second-class Yachts (handicap). First prize, £7 10s ; second, trophy.—Alabina led round Halswell buoy, but Muritai v'as first round Korokoro by ten seconds, Mahina next and Siren one minute and a half later. Thence ensued one of the prettiest races that has, perhaps, ever taken place in the harbour, the threo boats being close together. Suddenly tho Siren started luffing, and Muritai following, the Mahina slipped aheal. Shortly after, Siren caught Mahina. Muritai won on time allowance, although tlie finish was wonderfully close, as will be seen by the times cf arrival: —Alabina (scratch), 4hr 33min 17sec; Siren (7min), 4hr 33min ssec; Muritai (llmin), 4hr 34min ssoc. Tho Port Nicholson Yacht Club started two races on Saturday. In tho race for the Mills Cup, for first-class beats, Mr- A. H. Turnbull’s lorangi and Mr George.son’s Waitangi were the only starters. Tho Waitangi cleared the starting-lino five seconds ahead of the lorangi. Owing to the wind dying away to a dead calm, tho boats were unable to finish the race, and it will be re-sailed on Saturday. The Lwin Cup Handicap, for second-class yachts, was sailed. The Siren and Mahina were the only entries received. The Mahina cleared tho starting-line twenty-two seconds ahead of tho _Siren, both starting from scratch. The Siren finished at 6.29 p.m. and the TTali’m at 6.23.58 p.m., the former thus winning. In 1 hu dclass yachts the Karaka was the only bout

entered. Mr H. L. Nathan acted as starter, timekeeper and judge.
