DANNEVIRKE.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DANNEVIRKE, January 9. Messrs Andersen and Jacobsen have cut out the timber at - the Matamau mill, and are negotiating for a large area of milling rights in the Taihape district.
It transpires that the actual value of the Ngapaeruru block was increased by five shillings an acre, the funds thus obtained being intended for use in road construction. At a meeting of tile County Council a letter was read from the Commissioner of Crown Lanus pointing out that —rds” are payable to the Council on Ngapaerraru sections on the amount of rent paid, less 5s an acre for roading purposes. The settlers were under th© impression that, “thirds” oil capital would be available for road construction. In puisuance of that custom, they desired to raise a loan of £SOOO to complete the roads, and that the unexpended portion of Fie “thirds” should he hypothecated t-a cover interest on the loan until they ran out in the ordinary course. The settlers are now somewhat disappointeu. They find they will receive a lesser amount from “thirds” than they anticipated, especially as the amount each year will he insufficient to meet interest on a loan.
Some Mangatoro settlers recently requested the Government to pay a proportion of the interest which would he payable in respect to 4437 acres if it were in occupation of private individuals. A reply has been received stating that the Government cannot see its way to pay rates on unoccupied Crown lands of the Mangatoro estate. The as deemed unsatisfactory, and it has been resolved to further petition the Government.

Mr John Barrett, 'Commissioner-Gene-ral to Australasia from America in regard to' the St. Louis World’s Fair, to be held in 1904, is expected to arrive in Wellington shortly. He is now in Western Australia. Mr P. B. Fitaberbert, formerly -of Levin, has been appointed Assistant Director of Supplies to the Lands Department of the Transvaal. Mr Athelstan Parsons, another New Zealander, is Commissioner of Land Settlements for the Fas tern Transvaal. The Southampton Harbour Hoard, is in. - receipt of a communication stating 1 that a company had been .fcxmed to obtain Parliamentary powers t° tut a canal from London to. Southampton. Electric power will be used for towage, and the canal will be open to both pleasure boats and business barges, The Red Star steamer Kensington, which sailed from Antwerp on 25tn October and arrived at New York on 4th November, is the first vessel in the history of Atlantic navigation to cross the ocean with oil as feul under one of her boilers. The crude kerosene oil which was burnt continuously was apparently a success. _ ' A. one-time -famous clipper ship, the Andromeda, which arrived at Honolulu a couple of months ago, from Iquique, in a Bemi-dismusted condition, has been p abandoned to the underwriters.
