The returns of cases dealt with in the Magistrate’s Court, during the past year show 1715 cases of drunkenness (1409 males and 306 females) as compared with 1105 (920 males and 245 females) for the previous twelve months. Of the total number last year 1405 males and 305 females were convicted, 523 males and 69 females fined, - 397 males and 99 females imprisoned in lieu of fines or surety, and 28 males and 31 females imprisoned without option of fine. There were 36 other cases relating to drunkenness and 4 convictions against natives,
