TIMARU SPORTS
TIMARU, January 1
For the first day ‘of the Caledonian games, the Aveather Avas beautifully fine. Six thousand persons were present. Lord Ranfurly and Lady Constance Knox Avere guests of the directors at afternoon tea. The Minister for Public Works Avas also present. The sports Avere a great success. Beswarick won the half-mile cycle race, Arnst the mile, John Connell the mile and a half, and George Sutherland the two miles. W. Martin did a mile on his motor cycle. There Avas a great display in the running events, and all Avere Avell contested.
TIMARIT, January 2. The Caledonian games were concluded before a large attendance to-day. Martin (Australia; was beaten in the Invitation Scratch Race by R. Connell by two feet. The time for the mile Avas 2min 20 3-ssee. George Sutherland Avon the Mile Race from scratch easy in 2min 8 4-sscc, the New Zealand record. He also Avon the Two-mile Wheel Race in 4m in. 31 2-ssec. The sports as a whole were a great success. - SPORTS AT OAMARU. OAMARTJ, January 1. The attendance at the Caledonian Sjciety's games tc-day was a record. The weather was fine. The society gave about 42200 more in prize-money than usual, and had large fields of competitors from different parts of the colony. MASTERTON CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
Favoured with delightful weather, the twenty-seventh annual gathering of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society was held on Thursday at the Masterton Park Oval. There was a large attendance and the spectacle of the kilted Highlander and the sound of the bagpipes made the proceedings reminiscent of the land of brown heather and shaggy wood. - The programme comprised athletic and cycling events interspersed with dancing and musical competitions, and entries were numerous for most of the items. The well-banked 440yds cinder track was admirably adapted for cycling purposes and very few spills were experienced. The arangements were admirable and reflect-, ed great credit on the hon sec., Mr Duncan, and his assistants in the management. The Mastertc-n Municipal Brass Band was in attendance and discoursed an agreeable selection of music. Following are details;

INVERCARGILL., January 2. Tlie attendance at the Southland Caledonian sports was about a thousand less than last year, owing- to bad weather. Kane won the Caledonian Handicap, 135yds. in 13sec, with s£yds start.
