The heroic scheme conceived by a recent Victorian Government of exploiting the beet sugar industry, in that State, and thus finding employment for hundreds of families, has completely failed. One of the items' on this year’s Estimates is £IOOO to keep the factory at Maffra, which cost upwards of £60,000, in order. The. projectors calculated on crops of twenty tons of beet to the acre, whereas in the second year the yield fell to four tons. A proposal is now being made to once more try to get some work «©ut of the factory as an offset to the inglorious fiasco of a few years back-
