In his report on the recent earthquakes in the Cheviot and surrounding districts, Air A. MeKay, Government Geologist, will deal with the disturbances under three headings. He will describe what he observed himself, and in another division he will give the experiences and observations of others whose credibility he has tested. Finally he will put on record the conclusions at which he has arrived in regard to the shocks. When the disturbances were in progress, there was a good deal of exaggeration as to their severity and effects, and an authoritative account will therefore be appreciated, not only by scientists, hut also by the general public. Mr McKay’s report, which is nearly completed, will be illustrated by photographs. To show how powerful is the competion of the Argentine with these colonies, Mr E. Owen Cox, managing director of Birt and Co., stated on Friday at the luncheon on board the Surrey that fof months past three large steamers fully laden with produco had left .tho Argentine every week for South Africa. Tho quantity of supplies to the War Office from Australasia bore a very small proportion to the total imports to South Africa, and a proportion of the goods supplied in South Africa which were alleged to havq come from Australia and New Zealand had never seen those shores at all.
