The Government is calling for tenders for a direct monthly steam service between New- Zealand and South Africa, and for an alternative service between New Zealand and Western Australia and South Africa (four leading ports in Australia and the ports of Durban, Port Elizabeth and Table Bay being touched at). The maximum subsidy available for the service is '£30,000 and the contract will be for three years. The steamers are to be of not less than 2000 tons and not more than 4000 tons capacity, and are to be fitted with refrigerators sot meat and produce. Accommodation lot the carriage of passengers, mails and live stock is also required. The steamers must have a speed of not less than ten knots an hour, and preference will be given to those having the highest speed and the best accommodation. The rates of freight from New Zealand ports are to be as follows:—Wheat at per ton weight, 30s; flour at per ton weight, 30s; barley at per ton weight,32s Cd; oati at per ton weight, 355; bran at per ton weight, 40s; potatoes in sacks at pe ton woight, 40s; hay, oaten or meadow) pressed in bales at per ton of 50 cubi foot measurement, 37s 6d: potatoes boxes per ton of 50 cubic feet rneasu, _ mont, 37s 6d; frozen meat and da 17 produco, at current summer rates _. ing between Now Zealand and Lon ! other goods at proportionate rftte ,y „ not less than those current be twee Zealand and London from twagjw to be fixed by tbe Now Zealand Gorenv mont.
