RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

Wellington racing club s SUMMER MEETING. FIRST - ]DAY. The summer meeting of the Wellington Racing Club opened at tho Hutt Park racecourse on the 21st. The weather was fine, but a strong northerly wind, which raised clouds of dust, made matters unpleasant, especially for the ladies, who had assembled in force. The attendance, estimated at about 3000 persons, is considered to have been satisfactory. The well-known Canterbury owners, Sir George Clifford and Mr G. G. Stead, were among the visitors. The racing was decidedly tame, there not being ono exciting finish all day. Some of the events, judging by the dividends paid, were regarded as foregone conclusions. Although the names of eleven horses appeared as acceptors for the Anniversary Handicap, only six went to the post. Blazer, Motor and Fashion had other engagements, and Destroyer and Wilson had not put in an appearance at the meeting. • Goldenmero and Queen’s Guard received most support. Tho first-named was kept back during the early part of the race, probably on account of the heavy wind. This got him into a bad position on the rails, but when he got out he put in a great run. Ho could not, however, catch Queen’s Guard, who shapes well in Jenkins’s hands. Mr “ Walcot ” .was not present to witness the victory of his representative. Victoria Cross, Benefactor and Battlecry were the withdrawals from the Maiden Plate, four starting. Jemima a stable-mate of Benefactor’s, was best backed, and won in good style, after making her own running. Shrapnel Shell would probably have done better had he not been pulled about so much when racing against the wind. St. Lyra was beaten off and Frontier was outclassed.

The Cup field was reduced to a quartetteby the withdrawal of Fashion and St. Lyra. The race proved the good thing it looked for St. Michael, whose supporters laid 3 to 1 on. He won in the easiest manner. Mr G. G. Stead timed the different distances of the journey as follows Three furlongs, 41£seo; six furlongs, lmin 22Jsec; one mile, lmin 47£secj one mile and a half, 2min 38 l-ssec. The Yaldhurst representative for the Wellesley Stakes, Orloff, was sent out a strong favourite. His victory was also an-easily achieved one, and his backers had to accept 6 to 1 on owing to a dividend being paid on the second liorsc. Porirua ran . a good colt considering the winner registered a time record for the race. Greek Maid, who filled third place, had the veteran horseman, It. Derrett, in the saddle. Fashion was heavily backed in th© President’s Handicap, but ran disappointingly, as did Motor. A bump orinterference during the race is said to account for tlicir poor display. Queen’s Guard was brought out with a 71b penalty, and ran well, but was no match for Plaidie at a difference of a stone. Mr Macara’s mare made the most of her light weight, and, running along in front, had only to be shaken up in the ■ straight to win by two lengths. Of the ten runners for the Hack Handicap, Punawai and Laureate came in for most support. The first-named ran well, but could not foot it with the half-brother to Advance, who was tum- ! ed out in good form, and settled the opposition without much difficulty. He van generously enough when called upon to make his effort. The colours of the Anglo-colonial sportsman, Mr Spencer Gollan, were carried by Meta McCarthy. Another Porirua-trained youngster in Achilles was made favourite for the , Nursery Handicap. He scored in the I most decisive manner, and is apparently a very slippery customer. He had no ! difficulty in turning the tables on Helen 1 Faucit, who defeated him at Riecar- ! ton. Mr Stead’s filly came in for a lot I of support, and finished fourth. Achilles gave C.. Jenkins his third winning ride, j Goldspur, Rebel and Sentry declined : the Telegraph Handicap. Canteen, probably on account of the good track work he had done, was made favourite. The I grey, however, met more than his match i in Blazer, who is a champion over the distance. The St. Clair gelding runs 1 well at the Hutt, and has won the race three years in succession. He ran all but Canteen off tlieir legs. | During the day the sum of £9043 was ■ put through the totalisators. This ; amount is £7700 less than was pub j through on the first day last year, which | was a holiday. Bookmakers from all 1 parts of the colony were present, and i did a good trade on the inside and out- ! side the enclosures. j The Garrison Band enlivened the inj tervals between the events with seleci tions of music. Mr Walter Armstrong, j of Greytown North, acted as timeI keeper. Mr Harry Piper’s starting was j up to his usual form. Following are details of the racing:— ! When the barrier rose Blazer, on the inside, at once settled into Lis stride, and had Ringlet as his attendant for - the first two furlongs. Canteen i headed Ringlet rounding the bend, anti ; put in a strong challenge in the straignt. i Blaz-'-r. however, won by tnree parts of a length, with Torowai, who joined in : half-way down the straight, ciose up j third. Time. Irnin 13 3-o-ec. Divi--1 dends —Blazer. £3 19s: Canteen, 13s. SECOND DAY. | The weather was so stormy arly :on Thursday morning that it ; was thought the club would have to postpone the second dav’s races, but the conditions improved by’ about 10 o’clock, and it was_ decided, to go on with the racing. The threatening weather, however, was quite sufficient to interfere with the attendance, which was the poorest that lias ever been 'on the Hurt racecourse on an Anniversary Day. There were only about ! 2500 people present. Very little ram • fell, but a strong northerly gale blew across the course. The rain had made

the goiiig rather soft, but not to any j appreciable extent. Speculation on j the totalizator was again slow, the sum passed through the machine be- j ing £9073. making £18,130 for the two | days. This i~. £3*044 behind the total for tiie corresponding days of last year. The bookmakers were again strongly in evidence, and did good business >n front of tine lawn machines.

Backers had the worst of the day's transactions. Goidenmere v. as a strong favourite on the machine for the January Hack, hut a deal of money went on to Redoubt :>nd Fishion. ’ire latter cleared to the front previous to turning for home, but Goidenmere was on his track, and easily beat him. Indian Shot and Redoubt had no chance at the right end. Old Gold-pur had the largest following for the Electric Handicap, but lie was in trouble right fivm me Mart. Ringlet and Te Taia.ua carried everything off their legs. Ringiet retired beaten at the home turn, and Te Tai.il.a i seemed to have the race m _hn.ul, hut j Torowai, racing honestly, got up on j the rails and defeated t he- Warn-rapa : horse by a long neck. Float had a l ad j passage, but when the Captain Webb i filly got clear in the straight, she put in j good work, and finished close up third, j Backers would have nothin" but St ! Michael in the Racing Club Handicap. but the heavy weight and the state of j the ground hampered the big horse, j and be had to play second fiddle to The | Shannon. Ine latter was always pro- | minent, and came away in the last three ! furlongs. Cannie Cluel and Canteen j each met with interference in the | straight. Ostiak ran a good race for j seven furlongs, being in front up to I that point. I The Australian-bred colt Achilles j proved that he was entitled to be classed as the best two-year-old of the year by the easy manner in which lie "settled Mr Stead’s stylish colt Orloff. They j ran together till just reaching the home turn, when Achilles came away. Golden \ e * n ’ Pitting in a brilliant late run as she did on the first day, beat the Yaldhurst colt for second money. Motor had most friends for the Welter Handicap, Quiltina coming next in favour. It was a runaway victory for the Dunedin colt Battler, who won easily from Quiltina, with Fashion, who was finishing fast, third. Jewel Gun was also coming on well at the end. Motor was in trouble after going a furlong, and had no chance whatever In the Wellington Stakes Mr Stead’s hue filly Cruciform played with her opponents. Hewitt let her out from the distance, and she beat Canteen by half a length. The five furlongs were run in 1 min 2|sec. Optimist ran as though ho will win a race before long. Glenogle was, perhaps, unlucky to lose the Metropolitan Handicap, for he was stopped when trying to get up on the inside of Indian Queen, and, having to pull out on the inside, naturally lost ground. He then came with a great run, but just missed by a head. Torowai lost ground at the start. One of the biggest outsiders, and one of the best-bred competitors in the Second Flack Handicap—the St. LegerLady Curoton colt Cure—had a comfortable victory. He was the last to leave the mark, and was stopped twice on the journey, yet lie won anyhow at the end. His form was a long way better than on the first day, when lie was last nearly all the way. Now that lie has struck form lie should go on winning. Pure Silver ran a good horse, and, finishing

second, paid £3 17s ("being coupled with Mr A. Peters’s other charge, Velocity). Meta McCarthy, who started favourite, flattered her backer? for six furlongs, when she was out in front. Waitoa ran creditably, as did Laureate under bis big weight. The results of the days racing are as follows: January Handicap, of 125 sovs; second horse 10 sovs. One mile and a furlong. 230 Sir George Clifford's ch g Goldenmere, by Clanranald —Golden Vale. 3vrs. Fashion took charge, and entered the straight with a lead of three lengths from Goldenmere, but the latter came on full of running, and won comfortably by a neck. Turning for home, Ostiak died awav. and The Shannon went to the front/' St. Michael tried hard to reach the black mare, but she stayed there to the end, and won by three lengths. The weather for the concluding day of the Wellington Racing Club’s sim--1 mer meeting on Satui-day was favourable and a great improvement on that experienced by visitors to the Hutt Park on Anniversary Day. The attendance vas in consequence very satisfactory, being ‘estimated at about three thousand, j lle Premier was present, and appeared | to enjoy the sport. ; Fashion was withdrawn from the Summer Handicap, for which his stablemate (Jemima) was made favourite. See ran prominently for six furlongs, where Pleka, who was Tod Sloaned by the ; A ietorian horseman AleXamara, came i through and won with something in i band. This was the first victory of Hr ! Rathbone’s half-brother to Palaver since leaving the hack ranks. Pauliou was the only withdrawal from the Hack Welter. AA'aitoa was made a •slightly better favourite than Alooi. The latter was prominent for about six furlongs. The favourite ran well, and ; would probably have done better with a heavier horseman. The brother to Quiltiri is somewhat unlucky. Gipsy Jack came away in the straight, and had only to get one reminder to secure the verdict. Alourner can be expected to do better later on. The Port Nicholson Handicap was * good betting race. All except Mackintosh, who was outclassed, were welbacked. Pine (on Glenogle) was looking for a flying start, and got oae - Canteen and Ostiak were prominent to about seven furlongs. Canine Cliiel was allowed to lead for l. s i x furlongs, where Hewitt let Cruciform out, and Mr Stead’s beautiful fi]i v won anyhow from Tortulla, who ran well, considering the weight carried. The Disposal Stakes provided the best finish of the day. The Christchurchowned Battlecry was selected as a good thing, and although she got home, was ridden for about two furlongs. The placed horses were locked together at the finish, Battlecry being on the rails. An objection against the winner on the ground that his rider struck the second horse with his whip was not entertained. Ostiak, Torowai, Ringlet, Sentry and Rebel declined their engagement in the Federal Handicap. Being the last race, backers went for a recovery, and more money was invested in this race than in any other event on the day. Mr Watt started both Float and Indian Queen, but the first-named jumped round at the post and stopped there. Goklspur had too much pace for his opponents, and won all the way. A protest by the trainer of Te Taiaha, who finished second, was partly heard on the course, and then adjourned till to-mor-row. Te Taiaha ran second in the Electric Handicap, the same distance as the Federal, on Thursday. On Saturday Goldspur was meeting the Wairarapaowned gelding on a stone better terms. Should the protest be upheld Te Taiaha will pay £6 11s 6d and Shrapnel Shell £4 Is. After waiting some time for their dividends, backers of the placed horses missed the last train, and had to walk across the sandhills to Petone reaching town about half-past eight. During the day the sum of £8695 was passed through the totalisators, making a total of £26.831 for the meeting. Ties amount is £7352 less than was handled at last year’s meeting.

In the Federal Handicap the judge placed No. 6 (Battler) second, but after the backers of Te Taiaha had howled for about five minutes, the decision was altered, and Te Taiaha placed second. Battler was one of the last to finish. Following are details of the racing Summer Handicap, of 100 sovs; second horse to receive 10 sovs from the stake. Seven fin-longs. 219 Mr W.
