Resoluions u ere passed condemning the violence of the German press, and regretting that the services of two thousand picked natives could not be accepted for service in South Africa. Proceedings have been instituted against the Eketahuna County Council by an ex-employee for the recovery d damages under the Workers’ Compensation for Accidents Act.

Nothing definite has been done in the matter of providing a district high school m Masterton. It is expected that Inspector Fleming will shortly visit the district, and confer with tno School Committee on the subject. Trooper \Y. A. lorns has been presented by the staff of the Masterton Post Office, of which he was a member before joining the Eighth Contingent with a watcli and chain. It was decided at a meeting last night to form a new Horticultural and Industrial Society. A strong committee was appointed to canvass for members. An effort is to be made to hold an autumn show next month. Mr T. Carroll, the assistant road surveyor, has been transferred to the Wairarapa. Mr Hogg, M.H.R., has been informed by the Labour Department that single men cannot be put on road works in this district whilst manned men are out of employment. Friday, 7.45 p.m. The Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Championship matches, which were started yesterday, were continued to-day. Masterton was visited last night by a violent storm, which did considerable damage to orchards, besides uprooting numerous trees and shrubs. So far this season about 10,000 bales of wool have been despatched at the Masterton Railway Station. The output is expected to be considerably larger than last year. As a result of investigations made by Detective Cassells, who has been in Masterton for the last day or two a young woman named Ivate Alexander who resides with her mother in Dixon street, was arrested to-day on a charge of wilfully killing the male child which was found in the furnace of a boiler at the back of Mr W. McKenzie’s butcher’s shop on Tuesday last. The young wo-

man, who is about twenty years of ago, is in a very weak condition and is confined to bed. She has been examined by Dr Archer Hosking. Subsequently Thomas Murcott, who is in the employ of Mr W. McKenzie as shopman, was arrested on a similar charge. It will probably be some days before the female accused will be able to appear at Court. Thomas Murcott was charged before Messrs Duncan and Eton, J.P.’s this afternoon. The female accused was similarly charged, but did not appear. Mr Pownall appeared for both accused. Murcott was remanded till Tuesday next on bail, himself in £SOO and two sureties of £250 each. The inquest will be resumed on Tuesday.
