DEATH OF A VOLUNTEER
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) FEILDING, January 21. - The jury returned the following verdict on the body of Private Percy Crawford, who was shot on Saturday:— “That deeeasecl Percy Crawford met liis death by accident, being killed by a bullet fired by Private John Henry Thompson in mistake for a blank cartridge, used during a night attack on the Volunteer camp on the racecourse, Feilding, oifi Saturday, January 18th.” The follow*, mg rider was added:—“The jury are of opinion that before Volunteers are served with blank cartridges they should be questioned as to whether or not they had any ball cartridges in their possession.” Private Dowrick, who was one of the attacking party, gave the most important evidence, although he had to be pressed very hard in crossexamination. He stated that Private Thompson admitted to him after the attack that lie had fired a ball cartridge, as he had had one when he arrived in camp, and it was missing after the alarm.
Thompson was the man who found deceased in the morning. When the inquiry was adjourned last night he was arrested and bailed out by his father. After the finding of the jury this morning he was released.
