WRECK OF A BARQUE
POSSIBLE TOTAL LOSS OF THE VESSEL.
WESTPORT, January 18. The Danish steel barque Alexandra, in ballast, bound from Sydney to Westport, is ashore on Brighton beach, about 30 miles south of Westport. Captain Ankersen wired from Charleston this afternoon that the crew had been saved The vessel is in a bad position, lull of water, with many holes in her bottom, and her beams broken. The deck was started and he sees no use in sending ft tug. ° No further particulars are available.
The vessel arrived at Sydney on JanufP' Jth, m ballast from Port Elizabeth (South Africa). She was cleaned and painted, and left Sydney for Westport in ballast on the 10th inst. The Alexandra is a Danish barque of 610 tons, and is commanded by Captain Ankersen. Captain Worrall, of the Mapourika, on arrival at Wellington this morning, stated that news of the wreck was received at W estport on Saturday morning, and the vessel had evidently gone ashore the dav previous. The place where the wreck has occurred Captain Worrall describes as being rajky and very much, exposed. When he left Westport westerly weather was prevailing.
