CHATTER. When Ibex's name was missed from the entrants for the last Melbourne Cup it was supposed that those who knew him were doubtful as to his staying ability, but the reason assigned was that his owner was averse to submitting a young three-year-old to the severe preparation necessary for such a race. Ibex, however, has not been nominated for the Australian Cup, nor the Sydney Cup, though he figures in the Newmarket Handicap and Doncaster Handicap, and that fact is interpreted to mean that his trainer does not regard him in the light of being favourable to a long journey. Still, there is this to be said” that Ibex has not been tried over long distances.

The names of New Zealand norses are conspicuous by their absence from the V .R.C. and A.J.C. Autumn entries. Last season we were represented by Advance and Boreas, and considerable interest was taken in the races in which they were engaged. Mr Stead has not paid a visit to the other side since Scots Grey, Ich Dion (dam of Musketry), Musketry and Maun]ichor raced at Randwick. It is doubtful if the squire of Yaldliurst ever had more formidable representatives than at present —not forgetting Lochiel and Maxim and the presence of St. Michael, Cruciform and Menschikoff in the two Cups, Newmarket and Doncaster Handicaps and weight for age events, would have greatly increased tiie interest in the events named, and made them more intercolonial in character. The victory of the Maorilanders would have met with a right _ royal reception, not so lukewarm as is sometimes given to the beaieis of the yellow jacket at home. Motor lias been kept in the Century Stakes, of 1000 sovs., to bo run at the autumn meeting of the Auckland R-c----ing Club The weights of the horses left m after declaration of the fast forfeit are as followsTortulla ' 9.10 Hohoro 9.0, Motor 9.0. Nonette 8.12' Royal Artillery 8.12, St. Olga B.ll’ Beddington 8.11, Scotty 7.13, Maroon and Gold /.13. Sun Romo 7.11, Camille

The Carbine mare, Cordite, who was sent to England in 1890. was sold there at the last Newmarket blood stock distribution for 35g5., and Houri, by Nordenfeldt from Plevna, who went home in 1899, brought 20gs. These low prices, added to those realised by the Trenton marcs Goldlike and Dovecote, would make it appear that there was a slump in Australian-bred stock. Among the other sales effected about the same time, and which Australians will he interested in, included the following:— Atrocity, b f, 2yrs., by Carnage from

Hysterical, Mr F. W. Day, 25g5.; b f foal, by Patron from Catherine Parr, SOOgs. j Cape Wrath, br f, 2yrs., by Carbine from Caithness, 175g5.; Royal Hussar, 3vr3., by Carbine from Golden Moments,' 140g5.; Amnesty (1897), by Carbine from Rattlewings, 7ogs. 5 and Warsop, 2yr3., by Carbine from Semolina, 160 gs. Nominations for the Asliurst Guineas, 1903, for present yearlings, close on Saturday, 25th instant, with Mr J. H. Vincent, secretary, Asliurst. Record Reign was attacked with a severe illness soon after landing in Calcutta. His temperature stuck at 105, and the horse would not take nourishment. There is little doubt that Record Reign has been (says a Calcutta paper) none too fond of India since his arrival. When he landed he looked very sorry for himself. Talk as they will, we do not see wherein lies the sense of rushing a horse out to India so late in the year and then expecting him to come round and win a race that is almost as severe a journey as the Leger. After all they are only flesh and blood, and not iron and springs. Record Reign was furthermore racing in Australia up to within a day or two of his leaving for India, and practically walked straight off the racecourse on to the ship. In referring to a disqualification meted out to a country contingent by the stewards of the Australian jockey Club, “Alilroy,” of the "Sydney Mail,” says: —'•When a set of stewards pluck up enough courage to extinguish some metropolitan owner with influence behind him, the milennitim of the turf will be reached.”

A southern writer suggests to the stewards of racing clubs that the clerk of the scales should be instructed not to weigh out any jockey who is under the influence of liquor, as at least one accident was caused lately by a jockey not being perfectly sober. These remarks apply with equal force to North Island clubs. After payment of the second forfeit, the following horses remain in the Hawke’s Bay Stakes, to be run at the Hawke’s Bay Club's* 'Autumn meeting: ■ —Dodona, Spun Gold. Sergius, Lavalette, Grey Seaton, Porirua, Liquefy, Shellback, Battler, Despatch, Dirk. V indwhistle, Deerstalker. Tercelet, Romany Queen, Royal Artillery, Evelyn Mood. Sensation, Sarchedon, Boscobel, Ringman, Optimist. Fireawav. filly by Hotchkiss—A ixen. Eland, Indian Queen. Rajah, Bijoutry, Horonta, Gold Purse, Gold Dust. Fairy Dream, Armistice) V heellock and Cameiot.

Strathnairn has gone into F. Tilley’s ! stable at Fordell, and will probably be 1 ridden by A. Hall in his jumping engagements. For hurdle racing the Blairgowrie gelding will likely /rove a cheap horse at £loo—the price at which Mr Harris disposed of him. At the Vincent Jockey Club’s Meeting this month Tufto (St. Clair—Glauvina) won the principal event eacli dav. Tufto is a seven-year-old half-brother to Jemima. Stepina and Lavina. The quartette, all of whom have won races, are the only progeny of Glauvina. At tho AAaipawa Meeting on Wednesday last £IBO2 was int through the totalisator. Last season the meeting was held in September, when £2500 was handled in two days. The two-year-old Balnetry, by Sou’-wester—Little Primrose, by Hailstorm, was greatly fancied for the Maiden Hack Race, and won with something in hand from AVaimoe, Viil-o’-the-Wisp’s half-brother by Somnus. 111 the Welter Hack Borax, halfbrother hv Strenuous to Boreas, ran third to Blank, an aged gelding by Crusader and Baldie. The last-named pair met again later in the afternoon on similar terms, but at a lighter scale of weights. This time Baldie, who had the services of Cress in the saddle, wen by a length. Baldie is an aged gelding bv Renata—Valeria, and won the principal event at the Takapau (no titalisator) Meeting last month. Lady Quilt (by Quilt), who returned her eight supporters in the Disposal Stakes £'ls each, was a winner at the same meeting. The five runners for the County Handicap were evenly backed. Mongonui appeared to he winning half-way down the straight, but shut up when challenged, and Lady’s Link, finishing with her usual gameness, got home by a length and a half. The Chainlink mare paid the good price of £3 14s for a first favourite. The public stuck to her for the Flying Handicap, but she finished out of place. Different tactics were tried to suit Mongonui. She was allowed to run in the rear, and, putting in a late run, won by half a length from Wilson. Jack Tar, an aged gelding by Henchman—Nellie, got homo in the Homewood Hack Handicap, and paid £ll 14s. The well-bred Tiraillement and Waionui filled the places. The latter, by Goldreef —Murawai, placed the Farewell Handicap to Mr J. T. Blake’s credit. Cave, a big “pot,” finished third.

Lady’s Link and Waionui, winners at the Dannevirke Meeting this week, have each to carry 101 b penalty at Foxton. Their weights have been increased as follows:—Foxton Cup, Lady’s Link, Bst 41b: Summer Handicap. Lady’s Link, 8s 71b: Stewards’ Hack Handicap’ Waionui, 7st 71b.

T. C’onnop, who fractured his thigh through falling off A ictoria Cross at AVaipawa. ia( l boon doing little riding of

Queen’s Guard, who is in the Anniversary and President’s Handicap, was the only withdrawal from the Wellington Cup on Wednesday last, when the final acceptance was made. Fashion has continued his engagements in the Anniversary and President’s Handicaps, and St. Lyra has been entered for tno Maiden Plate. One or two of those engaged would appear to be looking for second and third place money, 100 and 50 sovs respectively. An electric hell, similar to those in use at Riccarton and Tauherenikau, lias been fitted up at the Hutt for the benefit of jockeys and to inform them when to leave the saddling paddock. Muscovite, who ricked one of his pasterns while competing in the AY ai Tirana Cup, and has since been blistered, present running out at the Hutt. >ir H. A. Soloman informs me that if Die gelding gets right in time he will take part in the Great Easter HandicapMuscovite was bought fora century, but since he and other members of the Stepniak tribe have kept, coming to the the value of the stock of the Elderslie sire lias gone up. The assistant-caretaker at the Hutt dreamed that Cannie Chiel won the AVellington Cup. Our Martinborougk correspondent writes:—Mr AV. Corlett entered a protest against the stakes won by Smithy and Strene at the Lower A 7 alley Jockey Club meeting on December 26 and 27, alleging that P. Juno was part owner of Strene, and the partnership not registered. The stewards held an inquiry into the matter on Saturday, but there was no evidence to connect Juno. A receipt from Shaw to Sorensen was produced, which clearly showed that Sorensen was the only owner. Juno acted as agent for Sorensen/ In the course of the evidence, however, the horse Strene was shown to have been trained by At . Shaw, an unlicensed trainer, Shaw having looked after the horse after he sold it. The stewards have now taken the matter up, and no doubt Strene will be out of it and the second monev go to Master Jack, the third horse. At a recent meeting of stewards of the W ellington Racing'Club a request in writing was made by the respective owners of the horses Jemima and Benefactor that in the event of both of such horses stariug m the Maiden Plate, they should be bracketed. The horses in question are trained in the same stable, but it is just possible they may not meet in the race mentioned. After consideration the stewards decided they could not accede to the request, the ease being one not provided for or met by the rules.
