Excursion fares will bo quoted by the Railway Department in connection with the departure of the Eighth Contingent. When the date of the departure of tho North Island section is definitely announced, the department will advertise its train arrangements. One reason why the South Island was not able to offer more horses for tho Eighth Contingent was that fewer hacks are used there. The better loads in tho South permit a larger number of vehicles to be employed. In the North Island tho position of things is reversed, and there are more districts in which riding is preferable to driving.
