Our correspondent wires that the first meeting of the Taranaki Maori Council under the Maori Councils Act of last year took place on Wednesday at Pariroa, Patea. Messrs P. 1 Sheridan (Superintendent under the Act), Hone Heke, M.H.R., Henare Parata (inspector under th e Act), Apirana te Ngata (barrister) and Eruerx te Kahu and a number of the Kurahaupo people were present. The party, on arrival at Patea, was joined by the official member under the Act, Mr Michael O’Brien. As thiS T district borders cn the confines of Te W hiti and Toll a s strongholds, it was approached by th© party charged with the initiation or th© Act with considerable anxiety. The party, however, returned safely to Wan* ganui, moi'e than satisfied with th© to ception of both themselves and the Act by the representative natives of the Taranaki district.
