WAR EXPENDITURE.
.■ return of the estimated cost of wars m South Africa and China, showing how the expenditure is to be met, has been issued as a British Parliamentary paper. The leading items are as follows : The supply grants for South Africa in 1899- amounted to £23,000,000, in 1900- to £63,737,000, and the estimate for 1901-2 is £56,070,000, making a total on this account of £142,807,000. For China the supply grants in 1900-1 came to £3,500,000, and, with a sum of £2,160,000, the estimate for 1901-2, the total under that head is £5,660,000. To this total and that for South Africa have to be added £4,850,000 charges on Consolidated Funcl in respect of interest, etc., on war debt, including the estimate for 1901-2 of £3,250,0(X), and this makes a sum total of £153,317,000. The amount provided or to be provided out of revenue is put at £45,271,000, made up as follows : —Surplus of 1899-1900, £9,350,000, suspension of the sinking fund in 1900-1 and 1901-2 £9,187,000; and additional taxation 1901-2, £26,749,000. The amount to be provided by loan is £108,046,000, made up as follows: Treasury bills, £13,000,000; war stock, £29,519,000; Exchequer bonds, £23,423,000; consols, £42,1Q4,000.
