ORGANISING THE FARMERS

NAPIER, July 30.

A meeting of farmers interested in the formation of a Farmers’ Union was held at Hastings this evening. Mr Glass, organising secretary for the Nbw Zealand Farmers’ Union, was present, and explained the objects of the union. It was decided to form a branch of the union in this district.

A meeting of farmers was held yesterday after the stock sale at Pleasant Point, with the object of taking concerted action against existing and prospective labour legislation. Mr W. S. Maslin, ex-M.H-R., was the chief speaker. At th ft close c f the proceedings a large

number declared in favour of establishing a union of farmers and other employers to conserve the interests of farmers and protect them from excessive Customs duties, to work in unison with similar associations elsewhere, while, as far as possible, avoiding party politics. Similar meetings will be held in other centres.

DUNEDIN, July 30.

At a meeting of the Taieri Agricultural Society, the incoming committee was instructed to communicate with kindred societies and farmers’ clubs, with the object of forming a’branch of the Farmers’ Union.
