V - • V , The Watery Supply Committee of -the -City Council made a valuable, report to that body last week on the vexed, question'of water supply. The report show-:-®d:—V-•-/ • : ' 1. That they had had -’a special report ; from the City Engineer on -th6 question > -of increased water supply., which, in con- - / junction with his previous report to the •Council of the -14th May, 1900, and the 10th November. 1900, they had carefully considered; also, they had had several conferences with the Engineer on the sub_ \ jeet of his various reports. Before, however, finally recommending the above scheme to the Council, the com-mittee-asked power, in view of the very large cost necessarily to be incurred, to obtain the opinion of one or more outside engineers thereon. In the meantime they made the follow-

i ing additional recommendations: —(a) T That meters be provided on the “mains at both waterworks and their entrances into L the city; (b) that any additional land ; found necessary to'secure the purity of the catchment area at Wainui be acquired; \ (c) that the Government be approached j with a view to having vested in the CounL cil that portion of the Forest Reserve at Wainui within the catchment area. Tn “conclusion, the committee expressed ' ' the opinion that as soon as possible after * the completion of the above scheme (if L adopted) a new main should be into the city from Wainui, and so finally : complete the water supply of Wellington - a-nd its extensions (if any). After a short debate, during the course > the report met with hearty approval, the matter was referred -back to the committee with "rpower to consult with the Citv Engineer and other engineers to be appointed “and draw up a comprehensive scheme.
