LABOUR TROUBLES
THE DIFFICULTY AT WAIHI. TWO MEN REINSTATED. ~ AUCKLAND, March 8. The vosxdt of Mr Tregear’s int.es view whii Mr Barry, superintendent of the Waihi Gold Mining Company, is-that the latter has agreed to reinstate ah the men dismissed from the mine since the presen fat ion of the union demands as soon as they drop i lie matter in dispute Mo. Toy, c'-ntiaw of the union, and Drunim, wiii be reinstated forthwith owing to Mr Tregear’s personal assurance that they took no active part against the conii-.iJ.iy. This nek now ledges the important principle that r-herds of unions are not t > ue singled out for presenting a e.uim. These concessions may result in satisfactory eolations ox the difficulty rvhen. the .ballot of the union is taken next Saturday. Cable advices have been received by the Premier from a large investor in London stating that the trouble between the Waihi Company and some of its employees has caused an uneasy feeling in mining circles in that city, owing to the fear that further complications may occur. A second cablegram received by the Premier states that the market valuer?? Waihi Company’s share® has dropped £3, representing about £1,000,000, owing to the receipt from New Zealand of news of the difficulty between the manager and the Miners’ Union. Mr Seddon is hopeful that labour matters at Waihi aaull be satisfactorily adjusted at an early date. A meeting of the NeAV./Zealand Workers’ Union AA r a-s held at the -Trocadero last Aveek, Mr J. O’Brien,' vice-presi-dent, in the chair. Correspondence was received from the Federated Eight Hours Union, and the elected delegates for the.ensuing twelve months:—Messrs P. M. Moron ey,’ J. Barr, O’Loughlm and O’Brien. .Nominations for next 3' ear Aver© received. as follows: —President,, Messrs.jJ.wO’Erien and R. Patton; vice-presidents, Messrs Fitzgerald, Dalton and Haig treasurer Mrs Tasker; secretary, Mr P. M. Moroney; auditors, Messrs Or-r and T. W. Young; trustees, Messrs Pinnock, Carmichael and O’Dea; committee, Mesdames O’Sullivan and Ross, Miss Tasker, Messrs Barr, Haig, O’Loughlin, Dalton. Worth and McLaughlin. It Avas decided to receive nominations until the next, meeting, when' the election Avill take place. A deputation from the Trades Council consisting of Messrs Naughton, Collins and Fuller Avaited upon the union and gave reasons Avhy the union should become affiliated Avith the-Trades Council. It AA r as decided to consider this matter at the next meeting. Plans and specifications are,,to* be prepared by Messrs Clere and Swan, architects, for five shops to be erected in Feilding to replace those lately destroyed by fire. - The-buildings will be of two stories', in brick One is to be a bakery for Mr Grantham, built to the order of Mr Fowlds, who is also to. have another shop, builti for letting; two other shops will be to the order or Mr Williamson, tailor, one to be occupied by himself, and the fifth will be to the order of Mr E. Goodbehere.
