The Fiji correspondent of the “Sydney Morning Herald” writes that “the feeling of unrest among the natives consequent upon the agitation for federation with New Zealand is subsiding. It is a dangerous experiment to interfere in native matters, as to-day the Fijian is in a transition state, half-way between barbarity and civilisation, and no one knows what the end might be if force is resorted to. Great credit is due to the Hon W. B. Allardyoe, the Assistant Colonial Secretary, who has visited the different disaffected places, and has restored peace and order where trouble was imminent.
