As usual/ a number of applications were made at- Monday’s sitting of the Supreme Court for exemption from the common jury. -,A volunteer was granted exemption, as provided in the. amended Act. A person .who professed to be inflicted with deafness failed to" arouse a sympathetic =,chord in his Honor’s heart, for the latter merely remarked that he did not think;, applicant was very bad, and that he would endeavour ho-get witnesses tp “speak ‘ up” for hisconvenience. A plumber who.is-engaged completing some - Work oh /a, building intended for . the accommodation of the Imperial troops, was. excused, probably on the principle that for the time beingi ■ be was ah important public officer. Mr Page,-- Town Clerk, although not exempt by .statute, was excused,, aftqjj it was ascertained 1 that there was a-full panel. Another person; whose years exceeded three score, was exempted, as by statute provided. h . , At Monday’s, ineeting of Court Lady ..Glasgow, P.O.R. Sister Woolcott presiding, the following resolution was carried in silence : —“That this court place on record the loss sustained in the passing - away of our late beloved Queen, nising in her an example of true womanhood, and in 'appreciation of her untiring efforts, during her reign to alleviate the sufferings and better the condition of women throughout her Empire.” The court was draped in black. Two new members were initiated.
Seventeen pupils of the Girls’ High School entered for the examinations of the University off New Zealand, held m December last, and sixteen' passed. Missfes < Alice •- Burnley, Winifred Clemance, Hilda'Compton, Mabel Callam, Brenda von Dadelszen,,, Meta Gibbs, Daisy Hitchcock, Ruby Re an, Selina Oliver, Muriel Pringle, Evelyn Watson, Mabel Welsby, Amy Williamson and Ada Paterson passed the matriculation examination, Miss Winifred Hannay passed the medical preliminary examination, and Miss Marion Strang obtained a credit place in the junior scholarship examination.
