A largely-attended gathering of the marine engineers in port was held on the 29th instant, the president (.Mr W. Bennett) in the chair. The occasion was the presentation of the gold badge of the institute to Messrs J. A. Moyes and Campbell Campbell. The president, iu presenting the badge to Mr Moyes, manager for Messrs Luke and Co,. Limited, and president for the year 19 JO, regretted that the institute could not. on account of the national mourning, carry out the proceedings in the usual manner. He, however, had much pleasure in presenting the badge to Mr Moyes, who had carried out his duties as president of the institute in a manner which left nothing to be desired. Mr C. J. Robertson, chief engineer of the s.s. Tarawera, presented the badge to Mr Campbell, chief engineer of the C.Gr.S. Hinemoa., and father of the marine engineers of the colony. The badge was a new century gift, on behalf of the marine engineers, by whom. Mr Campbell is deservedly held in high esteem. After the health of the recipients had been toasted with musical honours, Mt Moyes and Mr Campbell- returned thanks. The toast of “The Premier and his Government” was duly honoured, as a 7 so was that of “The Secretary,” (Mr rlislop). proposed by the president. A pleasant ceremony ended with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”' A singular < ire urnstance in connection with the presentation was the fact that M” Campbell sailed as engineer with Captain Robertson, father of Mr C. J. Robertson, in Tasmanian waters in the early ’fifties.
