LETTERS AND CABLES

NEGOTIATIONS IN AUSTRALIA. THE PENNY POSTAGE DIFFICULTY. MELBOURNE, January 28. Mr Seddon has had an interview with the Postmaster-General (Mr W. Gnrr) with reference to delivering New Zealand penny letters. The Pacific gable scheme, which Mr Seddon advocated in opposition to a Cape cable, was also discussed.

Mr Gurr replied, that he was strongly of opinion that the Eastern Extension Cable Company’s offer of reduced rates should be accepted at. once. He was disposed favourably to consider the delivery of New Zealand latters. Mr Seddon believes that a satisfactory solution, of the difficulty with regard to penny postage will eventuate. Mr Seddon has liad an interview with Mr Warren, manager of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, respecting a reduction in the cable rates for Queensland, Victoria- and New Zealand. He lias suggested a course which would ensure this without prejudicing the Pacific cable arrangement or giving the present terms asked by the Eastern Extension Company, A conference on the subject will be held to-morrow.
