Trooper Harris, of the Woodville district, has written a letter to the “ Woodville Examiner.” In the course of it lie says;—“Every corps in South Africa that I have seen reckon that they are the smartest and best fighters. So th«j are, if one could believe what the Generals say. After every fight the corps are formed up, and the General pulls their legs for about a quarter of an hour.” This is one thing that has hitherto not been very frequently refrerred to in the letters written by our troopers. A letter which has- been received in Wellington from Mr R-. Triggs, who left the service of tile- New Zealand Railway Department some time back in order to enter into the employment of the West Australian Government Railway Department, indicates that the writer and his. family are in the enj'oyment of good health. Mr Triggs has been kept- hard at work in effecting much-needed departmental reforms, but is now getting things shipshape. He finds the climate a good deal more to liis liking than he ex_ pected, nothing hotter than 90 in the shade having been experienced this summer.
It is understood that a petition is being signed asking Mr Reid, of Island Bay, to contest the Mayoral election for the Borough of Melrose.
