FRANCE’S COSTLY COLONIES

PARIS, Nov. 13. At to-day’s sitting of the Chamber M. le Myre de Vilers in his report on the Colonial Budget stated that the troops distributed throughout the various French colonies and m China numbered nearly 140,000. After emphasising the importance of maintaining maritime communication with the colonies, M. le Myre de Vilers added that the total strength of the home forces was 488,122 men; and that if France .sustained a reverse in Europe she would run a serious risk of losing her colonial possessions. , A victory in Asia or in Africa, he.earn, eluded, would not compensate for a defect on the Eastern frontier. In terminating his report he stated that the cost of maintaining the colonies of France had reached the formidable figure of 191,000,000 francs. .
