He maintained that as Captain Burton had never been supplied with a copy of the charges prior to. the inquiry, his certifccate should have been immediately returned. In the case of Mr HugS ms j: captain of the steamer had actually been in charge of the vessel for about twenty minutes prior to the mishap, and so his (Mr Huggins’s) certificate should never have been interfered with.
The President (Mr George Wilson), in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, said the latter showed that the receipts (including a balance °U from last year), amounted to £cll, and there was a balance of £92, with assets to the amount- of £1149. The President asserted that the Association deserved the support of the mercantile community for its efforts to have the dangerous coast of this colony efficiently lighted. Owing to failing health the secretary (Captain Kennedy) resigned the position of secretary and treasurer, which resignation was received with regret. He will, however, continue to act until another secretary is appointed. Captain Wills gave notice of motion that persons holding a certificate of any grade below that of master shall be eligible as honorary members; that a new rule be marked 8a to read as follows: —• “That in addition to the membership provided for in rules 5 to 3, any gentleman desirous of joining tho Association may do so on payment of an annual subscription. Such members shall be known as associate members, and must be elected by the committee of management, but are not to be entitled to any of the privileges ,of ordinary members.’’ The officers nominated, and whose names were published in the “Ti®®s some weeks ago, were elected, and Captain King was elected to fill the position occupied by Captain Campbell, who did not seek re-election.
