RACING IN NEW ZEALAND

ihe weather was truly delightful, and nacuro was dressed in her best at iiiut Para on 22nd. Consequently the nation.; of the w elliugton Racing C.ub, whose name was legion, spent- a most e«joyaoie day The lawns and course were in excellent order, and reflected great credit upon the caretaker, White)' Visitors were present from ail parts of Hie colony. Revelling in the sunshine, the laches disported tliemsc-lves in holiday attire, on the lawns and grancistipid, adding grace and picturesqueness to the 'scene which had all the attributes of gaiety and keen enjoyment. The dresses worn were in excellent taste, some of them being particularly striking and beautiful. The arrangements in connection with the meeting were superior in every, respect- to anything which Wellington Club patrons have hitherto been aceustoined to, and there-need be no anxiety for tne future if that standard is maintained. The grandstand catering by Mr Pinnoek, of the Trc-eadero, was sirstciass. The Garrison Band contributed the top note to the proceedings in the shape of afi excellent programme or music.

Racing -started with-the ..ovembef Handicap. There were in the field several contestants with recent performances to show. In the paddock none cf them left much to he desired in the way of condition. Oracle looked and moved paiticulariy well, and on his Taratahi running was made favourite. As was expected the race was a sound run one. The horses were in a bunch from start to finish. - It was Rubin, by Tasman—Rubina, with. T. O’Brien on top, who. having been. ■ coaxed back to .-something like liis ancient; , , form, occupied a prominent place: - tnrougnout, 7 and: got bis nc-se m front of . Aide-do-Camp'and Perfection (in lailn 43 3-ssec) at the business end after one of the prettiest races ever seen on the Hutt course. The Maiden Hack Race was the best of good tilings for Transport. The Cuirassier gelding got into a nice position at the entrance to the: straight, and carefully nursed by Hording buried everything for pace, winning - in the smart time of Imin 17-4-o.sec. The word had gone round, and Trans-• port was “the correct pea"' with the mar jority. Maro, though not cherry ripe,, ran creditably into seccnd place. Heritas, ■ who was guest fancied after the favour,- Yite, ran disappointingly, and was never-/. prominent. . Battleaxe and Crusoe pulled out the November Handicap, leaving a even field of eight in the race. They ail stripped .racchorse-likc, and made , a .. .pretty picture as they paraded the Iryvn. Tortulla. the top-weight, was ei'ideore' very well: Cceur de Lion never lOO.rea fitter ; Dingo was in ripe condition, Materoa gave evidence of a careful preparation ; SkobelofT justified by appearance his favouritsm on the machine. Volley was a trifle faded; Rubin bore signs of the strenuous exertions in too first race; Sirius was as.fit as hams could make him, and advanced in piwbc favour on inspection. Rubin and Alare* roa were made most use of in toe ea part of the race, Tortulla lying hmi'.. in the rear. SkobelofT, running i”": ly, was early under punishment. ing round on to the river side. Dingo a - , Coeur de Ijion were disputing tlm - premacy at the head of a bunched he

bvtbe stables Tortulla, called upPUJS Jenkins, suddenly ran into the l ? n j and putting daybgbt between him- | if n d the field, showed the way into s f rtrakht, with Coeur de Lion and K 5 0 v'i n ff°iri' hot pursuit. Half-way down ' Fk straight the leader visibly tired, and ? :r ?f e inokod momentarily as if her puri --‘ti id wear her down. Skobeloff. " iwever swerved under the whip, and failed lii an attempt to get up on the • side and Cceur de Lion just fell short 1 victory. Heads only separated tho dree as they passed the judge, and the verdict went to the big Torpedo mare, ljj co vered the distance with Bst 101 b aboard in 2min lOsec. Jenkins was given deserved ovation on his way back to the scale. Frost, on his Wanganui and Taratahi running, was voted the best thing in the hurdle race, .but it was gotu’s day out, and though he fenced badly, he left nothing a chanoa when it came to racing, and won as he liked in 3min 21 4-osec. The Shorts Handicap was a gift to Ostiak, who was made a red-hot favourite, and who ran right up to his reputation as a sprinter of the first water. The Maori-owned Lady’s Link won the First Hack Handicap after a slashing set-to in the straight wish Redoubt and Tukapa. in lmin. 45see, and paid the acceptable dividend of £7 .17s. The First Welter Handicap proved to be the best of good things for Whitney who led all the way, and won with some-

thing in hand. Backers made a phenomenal favourite of Ruamahanga, who dead-heated with the top-weight, Wliitirea, after being somewhat interfered with in the race. This was Jenkins’s third win during the day, and lie was again loudly applauded. The Flying .Handicap, which concluded the "(lav’s sport, was a pretty race. The Shannon made a phenomenal run a furlong from home, and, cutting down all opposition, won with something to spare in lmin 15 1-osec from Chasseur, who had macl9 the running for the greater part of the distance. Appended are details of the racing:

At the rise of the barrier the colours of Aide-de-Carap and Rubin, who held insido positions, snowed out prominenty. At the six-furlong post they were attended by Oracle and Melwood, Crusoe last. weather was again perfect and the conditions entirely favourable tor the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s Spring Aleeting on Saturday. Consequently the gathering was in every sense an enjoyable one—the attendance being large and representative; the programme carried through well to time, under the competent direction of Air H. M. Lyon and his staff ; the catering in both the inside and outside booths all that could be expected; tho starting excellent; the racing good and reflecting great credit on'the handicappers, Alessrs J. O. Evett and J. E. Renrys; the lawns in first-class order; and the course in better condition than it has ever been known to be before, and favourable to very fast running. One of the best races of the day ivas provided in the Petone Handicap. Whitney, on the • strength of his first day’s running, was made a warm favourite on the machine, and he certainiy made a big bid for the stake. But there were two better at the weights, and the Foulshot- gelding had to tie contented with third place. Alelwood, the winner, was full of running and had to be steadied into, the ruck during the earlier stages of the race, in which Whitney showed most prominently. When Air Davies’s little colt had his head loosed in the straight, however, ne came away with a great dash of pace, and stalling off a late run of the game but unlucky Volley, won nicely by naif a length in the smart time of Imm 43sec, paying the nice dividend of £ll to his admirers. The colours of Air Davies were again carried to victory in the Hack Welter Handicap by Waterford, a fast and racing-like gelding by Jet d’Eau —Forlorn Hope.

There were seven acceptors for the Pearce Handicap, the principal race of the day, and these furnished a contest well worth the seeing. Mr Piper effected a magnificent start, for which he was applauded, and immediately the jockeys got down on every horse in the race, and it coulu plainly be seen that it was to be a set-to in deadly earnest. At that stage of the proceedings they were making every post a winning post with a vengeance, and ran in such a tight-packed bunch that it was hard to distinguish the positions held by the various contestants. The race was, in fact, decided at this stage. Just before the home turn was reached Alaterca singled herself out, and leading into the straight, gradually drew away from her full sister, The Shannon, who made a gallant attempt to overhaul her, and won by something over two lengths. It was a great race and evoked rare enthusiasm amongst the spectators. The

favourite, Tortulla, ran absolutely- last practically all the way, Jenkins properly refusing to persevere with her after finding the turn affairs were taking. At the conclusion of the November Hurdle Race a hostile demonstration was made against Frost mm Ins rider by a section of the Dubiic, and the verdict of the stewards was generally approved. At a meeting of the committee of "the Manawatu and "West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association in Palmerston North 'last Saturday, a question or some imnortancb was Discussed in regard to the age of certain cattle exhibited at the late show. Two leading Wairarapa - breeders called attention to trie fact that some cattle shown, in tne fat bullock classes were, in their opinion, over the age stipulated. A discussion then arose as to whether the num--Ler of teeth in a bullock’s mouth was an absolute-guide, to its age. Several, members expressed themselves - satisfied; '.trilb the assurance of the owner ot tne stock objected to that the cattle were under age, but as the owner was a .member of the the majority thought it was necessary an inquiry should be held; and this was agreed tc> . The Manawatu and West Coast Agn chltural and Pastoral Association has r ceived! intimation from the Nation Dairy Association and tho Butter . Cheesemakers’ Association that the annual meetings of these bodies tvi held in Palmerston North, into an invitation from the Agricu and Pastoral Association.
