EDUCATION BOARD.
At the meeting of the Education Board last week, there were present— Messrs J. R. Blair (chairman), W. C. Buchanan, F. Bradey, W. W. McCardle, E. Feist, J. Youifg, J. Robertson, A. Y 7. Hogg, M.H.R., Rev J. Paterson. The statement of the Board’s finances was as follows: —Maintenance account, dr., £577 13s 9d; buildings, dr., £1325 9s 3d. Contract liabilities, £1643 7s 6d; payments required; maintenance, £3971 18s lid ; buildings, £534 2s od. The chairman said the Board’s position was no worse than, it had been for years past. Mr Feist moved that all previous resolutions in regard to the Mangamaire School be rescinded. The motion was seconded by Mr Bradey, and carried. ' . - Mr Buchanan thereupon moved that the Board build a school on the ridge - site .at’ Manga'maire," Sbymg. that ’ lie' could not see that any resident on the flat would bo placed at a disadvantage by having to send his children to a school on that site. V - ' ' Rev J. Paterson seconded the motion. An amendment by Mr Feist, that the school be erected on the railway station site, and seconded by Mr Hogg, was negatived by five votes to three, and the original motion agreed to. It was decided to purchase three acres for the school sit el A deputation from Kaitoke waited on the Board and urged that a teachers residence should be erected in-place of. the house burned down some-time-ago. The chairman said the average attendance at the school was only eleven. At present there were no funds available for the purpose of erecting a residence. Mr George Brown urged on the Board the necessity of establishing an infant school at the Upper Hutt. Consideration of the matter w r as postponed till the next meeting of the Board. It was decided to award scholarships to those who had won them at the recent scholarship examinations. Mr Robertson raised the question of candidates winning Board scholarships and University scholarships. The chairman said tnat was more a matter for the v lctoria" College Council than the ’ '"hick, had only to consider whether the candidates for the Board’s schohtrships fulfilled the required conditions. Mr McCardlo wanted to know whether it was possible for a boy to attend at Wellington College and at the University. The chairman said yes, but they must be carried on both together. The chairman said such an appointment iroaH be against the regulations. Mr Mansfield said the lack of a pupil teacher " resulted in parents sending thfeir children to the town, schools. Mr Yorag--said if the children now going to the town schools went to the Khandaßah' School they would be entitled to ",aa; assistant teacher. It was stated", that i the residents had offered to,? pay. for, a pupil eaeher, but they wefb not a!lowed to do so. The chairman saiithe Board could not break .the regals- i tions. Mr Lee (inspector) advised tia! Board to adhere to the regulations,and the Board decided to do so. ' An application for a pupil teacher at Dreyerton was also refused. An application by Mr F.
