BAINBRIDGE, THE RACONTEUR

SERIOUSLY INJURED BY SHOOTING.

AUCKLAND, Tuesday. Oliver Bainbridge, tlie long-haired man who described himself as “the raconteur,” and who gave out that he was on a. walking tour around the- world, met with an accident in the 0 tahuhu district yesterday afternoon, a shot from a revolver going through the left side of his chest, just escaping tho heart. He states' that lie wa > walking along- the road with the loaded revolver in his? hand, and that lie tripped over something and fell. The result was that the revolver in his hand went off, and the bullet went through iiis chest. Bainbridge is in a precarious condition at the hospital. It appears he visited the farm of Mr Nichols, near Tarnaki river, yesterday. Mrs Nichols, in conversation, complained of the havoc weasels mad i with her poultry. He said ho would shoot them with nis revolver. He shot one and, in clambering up the river bank, slipped and fell, the rev Tver going off. The bullet came out ai the oack. It is doubtful whether be will survive. He made a statement at the hospital that the affair was purely accidental.

NAPIER, Tuesday. Goodwin, the railway porter who met with a nasty accident while shunting trucks at the Napier railway station, succumbed to liis injuries during the night.

Major Ross, District Coroner, conducted an inquiry at Turakina on Monday afternoon touching the death of Mary Moran. _ The jury returned the following verdict:—“That deceased met her death by a trap accident on the hill between Wangaehu and Turakina, and! that no blame is attachable to anyone. ’ The following rider was added:—“That the attention of tne Rangitikei County Council bo called to the sharp turn on the road just about the scene of the accident, as there have been several narrow escapes at the same place.”
