TREE-PLANTING ON RESERVES.
As most persons know, the hills around Wellington v. ore not always so destitute of arboreous vegetation as they are to-day. Those who have walked over them will lia\ e come across the tree and fern stumps which tell ol the time when the eminences were clothed with virgin lush. In some gullies—as, for instance, on the Tinakori Range—there are e; on now to be found little coppices that have escaped the general destruction which denuded the gi eat bulk of lie Lil’sidos. Ev degrees some parts cf the lid's ire being replanted. The City Council has made a. fresh start with the re-afforestation of parts of the Town Beit. Some private owners have considerable plantations in various parts of the more elevated suburban areas. The Sc-atoun Road Beard has decided to do something. and the Wellington Harbour Board yesterday resolved to plant part of tlie Pilot Station reserve, near Worsen - Bay. After some remarks made by the Mayor, it may be taken for granted that care will be exercised in the matter so as to see that the trees and shrubs planted are adapted, to withstand the blasting influence of the southerly winds.
